Tips to Protect Sensitive Skin While Gardening

Backyard gardening is something that is dear to my heart. It’s fun, relaxing, and the food we grow is used in recipes that I develop in our kitchen. Gardening is a truly invigorating activity- both mentally and physically.

However, dealing with weeds and some plants in the garden can be irritating on my skin. Squash in particular, for reasons that I really don’t understand, can cause my skin to get irritated and have me coming back indoors to take an antihistamine.

Recently, I’ve begun to wear long sleeves in addition to my garden gloves and rely on those two combined to keep my skin free of irritations. That said, those long sleeves come off as soon as I’m indoors and straight into the laundry to be washed my a laundry soap I always trust to get rid of and be free of allergens: helps make my life simpler and clearer.

Steps to Stay Allergen Free While Gardening or Doing Lawn Work

  1. Wear long sleeves and pants to make sure that sensitive skin is covered.
  2. Always wear gloves when doing lawn work.
  3. As soon as you come indoors, remove the clothing that was worn or gardening/yard work. You don’t want to brush up against something or touch it later with your sensitive skin.
  4. Put gardening clothes in the washing machine and run a load of laundry. Use a dermatologist recommended laundry soap like Your skin will thank you for it. (Note: is not intended to treat or prevent allergies).
  5. Take a shower. On the off chance that you got any allergens on your skin when you were gardening or removing clothing, you want to make sure to wash those down the drain.

Family History of Diabetes

Like many families, my family has a history of diabetes. That’s why knowing about diabetic meal planning is important to me.

My Mother-in-Law lived with diabetes for much of the time that I knew her. During that time, she was also in poor health–partly due to poorly managed diabetes and partially because of other health problems.

Some of those other health issues were likely a direct reflection of not committing to the special diabetic diet that her disease required her to be on.

Does Diabetes Run in Families?

Yes.

Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes can and do run in families. Type 2 Diabetes has also been linked to obesity, so sometimes it is difficult to tell if it is family history that is the culprit or weight.

According to Diabetes.org, my husband has a 1 in 7 chance of getting Type 2 Diabetes at some point in his life, because his mother was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes prior to the age of 50.

The fact that he isn’t as fit as he could be and has put on some extra weight over the years is a factor that could heighten his risk.

Diabetic Meal Plans are Essential

The only thing that we can do to try to prevent diabetes in our home is to eat sensibly and maintain a good diet.

When it comes down to it, if my husband is going to inherit Type 1 diabetes, there is nothing we can do about whether of not he gets the disease. The only thing that we can do is be proactive in understanding the requirements for a diabetic diet and ensuring that if the time comes, we are steadfast in managing the disease to the best of our abilities.
